10L Retort Pouches for Juice: From a “Metallised Bag” Brief to a Validated 121°C Process

North China · Juice (10L, high-temperature retort sterilisation at 121°C)

The Challenge

The product requires high-temperature retort sterilisation at 121°C, and the customer was looking for packaging in a 10L format.

The initial brief was a conventional metallised bag with a butterfly valve — a structure that cannot meet a 121°C retort requirement.

A retort pouch also imposes extra demands on seal strength and cap temperature resistance, so bag, cap and sealing structure have to be matched under the same process conditions.

What We Did

  • Structure matched to the sterilisation process: a high-temperature retort pouch with pure aluminium foil (AL/PA/PE, or AL/PA/RCPP depending on filling conditions), withstanding 121°C while maintaining a high barrier and meeting both the retort step and shelf-life requirements.
  • High-temperature cap and sealing structure specified together with the bag under the customer's own process conditions, with a butterfly valve configured for the intended use.
  • Two rounds of sampling: the first sample shipped on 19 May, and the second sample reached the customer on 28 May and completed the retort test successfully. Pricing and quantity were then discussed and confirmed by the customer on 13 June.
  • The project now moves forward according to the customer's own production and purchasing schedule (no order placed yet); the solution and quotation are confirmed and the project awaits scheduling.

The Result

  • The 121°C retort test passed.
  • Pricing and quantity were discussed and confirmed by the customer.
  • The project advances according to the customer's production and purchasing schedule, currently awaiting scheduling.
