When we worked with a biotech customer moving from powder to liquid products, their first questions were not about unit price. They asked: will these bags open reliably on our filling line, and can we sample first?

That order makes sense. A bag that will not open does not cost you a few cents of unit price — it costs line speed, material and safety: the suction cups fail, the line stops, forced handling tears bags, powder cakes on the inner bag mouth, and weak seals come back as complaints later.

Yet "bag opening performance" has no single industry metric. Buyers and suppliers each mean something different, so it usually ends up as trial and error. This article breaks the phrase down into actions that can actually be checked.

1. Bag opening = 3 actions x 2 ends

· Filling line: pick up → open the bag mouth → fill → seal (4 checks)

· End user: open (tear / peel / unscrew) → dispense (pour / draw off / pump out) → re-close (3 checks)

Every check has visible symptoms and can be validated on site — that is how an adjective becomes an acceptance test.

2. On the filling line: 4 checks

Check 1 — Will it open? Can the suction cups open the bag mouth?

· Typical symptoms: will not open, only one side opens, immediately re-sticks

· Typical causes: film too thin or too soft (not enough stiffness), inner surfaces too tight together, static cling, blocking after stacking

· How to check: open 30–50 bags from the same lot in a row and log failures by type. Consistency matters more than a single success

Check 2 — Will it stay open? Does the bag mouth hold until the product goes in?

· Symptoms: the mouth springs back as soon as the cups release; the mouth closes as the filling nozzle enters

· Related factors: bag style (three-side seal / stand-up / spouted), folded edges at the mouth, cut profile, film stiffness

Check 3 — Will it line up? Bag mouth and fitment versus the filling mechanism

· Symptoms: nozzle will not enter or enters off-centre, fitment clamped crookedly, product overflows

· The key point: the fitment dimensions must match the clamp on your existing filling machine. The same outer shape can come with different dimensions and locating steps — confirm against the physical sample

· Our approach: one clamp, multiple fitments — upgrade from a flat plug cap to a valved or needle-piercing cap without changing the machine

Check 4 — Will it seal? Is the seal area kept clean?

· Symptoms: product trapped in the seal, liquid film in the seal area, weak seals

· Powder products are the worst case: powder adheres to the inner bag mouth

· How to check: inspect seals after filling (visual plus peel/tug). For powders, sample continuously rather than only first and last bags

3. For the end user: 3 checks

Check 5 — Can it be opened? Tear notches and easy-open lines; the opening force of a pull-ring screw cap; press-fit caps that may need a cap opener in some settings.

Check 6 — Does it dispense properly? The dispensing method decides the fitment — this is the first step of selection, not the last.

DispensingFitmentTypical use
Pour outflat plug cap, pull-ring screw cap, duckbill capone-time emptying, large volumes
Draw offbutterfly tap, long-spout screw valverepeated small draws with flow control
Pump outneedle-piercing cap, long-spout valve with tubingconnection to pumps and metering equipment

Check 7 — Can it be re-closed? Pull-ring screw caps can be screwed back for repeated use; flat plug caps are single-use. Gas-generating products are a separate case: internal pressure pushes the bag up (common with fermenting liquid fertilizers), which is why a venting cap is used — our "Qici 6" venting cap is designed to vent air without letting liquid through.

4. Five groups of variables that decide bag opening

VariableWhat it changes
Film itselfthickness and stiffness, surface slip, static, additive migration over time
Bag style and cutthree-side seal / stand-up / spouted, folded mouth, tear-notch profile
Fitment and clampdiameter, base type, locating step, dispensing method
Filling equipmentsuction cup area and vacuum, opening mechanism angle, nozzle diameter, line speed
Storage and environmenttemperature and humidity, stacking pressure, storage duration, transport vibration

One conclusion: the same lot of bags behaves differently on different opening mechanisms — bag opening performance can only be validated by testing, not read off a spec sheet.

5. How to validate a sample: six things you can do in 30 minutes

1. Manual feel: how quickly the inner surfaces re-stick after you open the mouth

2. Continuous opening: 30–50 bags from one lot, log failure count and failure types

3. Alignment trial: test-fit with your nozzle and clamp, or fit the cap against the physical sample

4. Filling trial: fill 5–10 bags with your actual product; inspect mouth contamination and seal integrity

5. Re-test after storage: repeat step 2 after a few days (simulating transport and storage) — many opening problems only appear later

6. End-user trial: have one end user open and dispense, and see whether any tool is needed

Use a simple four-column record: item / method / acceptance criterion / result. Set the criteria together with your own QC — every plant and product differs, and a generic pass line from a supplier is more misleading than helpful.

6. How we handle it

· Sample first, quantity second: whether the first order is a few thousand bags or tens of thousands, we produce samples and fix the structure from the test result. Small batches get the same test plan — that is simply how we work

· Fitment selection starts from how you dispense, and must match your existing clamp — if we can avoid changing your machine, we will

· Liquid fertilizer: "Qifei 13" pre-made BIB bags (8L / 16L, holding 10 kg / 20 kg, customisable to the fertilizer), "Qifei 15" roll film for automatic packaging, "Qici 6" venting caps (air out, liquid stays in — solving gas build-up and leakage), with matching semi-automatic fillers (1.5–2 t/h at 20 kg/bag) and roll-film automatic lines (2–4 t/h), plus outer cartons for retail-ready packing

· Powder-to-liquid customers: selection and sampling support — aseptic BIB bags (10L–220L) and high-cleanliness bags (1L–220L) for biotech, with high-purity PE inner layers and solvent-free lamination, compatible with HPP / irradiation / EO sterilisation

· We are straight about the data: bag opening is the combined result of film, bag style, fitment, equipment and environment. We will not claim "zero failures on any machine". A conclusion tested on your equipment and product is the only one worth having

7. FAQ

Is bag opening related to film thickness? Yes, but it is not the only factor. Thinner film is softer and harder to open, yet simply adding thickness affects cost and sealing parameters. First confirm that the bag opens consistently, then optimise thickness.

What failure rate is normal on an automatic line? That number is defined by your equipment and product. We recommend classifying failures (will not open / re-sticks / tears / misalignment) rather than watching the total.

Why does the same bag run differently on another machine? Suction cup area and vacuum, opening angle and line speed all differ. Whenever equipment, format or product changes, re-test.

Can we change dispensing method without changing the clamp? Yes — that is what our one-clamp-multiple-fitments design is for. The fitment dimensions still have to be confirmed against the physical sample; the same outer shape with different dimensions is common.
