Why Sesame Paste Packaging Is Hard: Oil Migration, Oxidative Rancidity & Dispensing — High-Oil Sauce Packaging Solutions
Sesame paste is a staple condiment in Asian cuisine and hotpot dining — and one of the most technically demanding products in sauce packaging. Many customers new to flexible packaging ask: what kind of bag is right for sesame paste? The answer starts with a fundamental difference between high-oil sauces and ordinary liquid products — pure PE film blocks water, but it cannot block oil.
Challenge 1: Oil migration. With high oil content, sesame paste in an ordinary bag will gradually cause oil to migrate through the film — the bag surface turns greasy and oily, creating a serious quality incident. This is the key difference between high-oil sauces and water-based liquids: an oil barrier layer (PA/nylon) in the film structure is mandatory, not optional.
Challenge 2: Oxidative rancidity. Oils are sensitive to oxygen and light. Oxygen ingress triggers oxidation, producing rancid off-flavors and nutrient loss; light accelerates the process. Beyond the PA oil barrier, long-shelf-life products need metallized ultra-high barrier film — the metallized layer blocks both oxygen and light.
Challenge 3: High-viscosity dispensing. Sesame paste flows poorly. Narrow closures make filling slow and dispensing incomplete. The solution is a wide mouth with large valve : wide opening for efficient filling, large valve for smooth dispensing of viscous products with minimal residue.
Standard Bag vs High-Oil Sauce Bag: What's the Difference?
The differences between a standard liquid bag and a high-oil sauce bag show up in five areas. Film structure : a standard liquid bag uses a PA/PE+PE base structure; the high-oil sauce bag builds on the same PA/PE+PE base with an added PA oil barrier layer, and can be upgraded to a metallized ultra-high barrier structure for high-oil products. Oil barrier : with a standard bag, PE alone cannot block oil, so oil migrates through the film over time; the dedicated bag's PA layer prevents oil migration. Oxygen/light barrier : standard bags offer medium barrier performance; the metallized option delivers OTR<1, blocking both oxygen and light. Closure : standard bags use standard closures, while the dedicated bag uses a wide mouth with large valve for smooth viscous filling and dispensing. Use case : standard bags suit water-based liquids; dedicated bags suit sesame paste, peanut butter, hotpot dips and other high-oil sauces.

Core principle: confirm the customer's sterilization process first, then match the film. Different processes demand different packaging — UHT aseptic cold filling needs no heat resistance and uses a standard PA/PE+PE structure; hot filling / water-bath sterilization requires 100℃ resistance, using a heat-resistant closure and film; retort sterilization (121℃) requires 121℃ resistance, using aluminum film or retortable metallized film.
Two structures: For short-shelf-life and cold-chain customers, PA/PE+PE with wide mouth is sufficient. For long-shelf-life, ambient or export customers, upgrade to metallized ultra-high barrier (PE/VMPET/PE) — blocking oxygen and light to preserve flavor. Sizes cover 5L–25L; closures are matched to each customer's existing filling equipment.
Honest Boundaries
Two boundaries should be clear for high-oil sauce packaging: first, aseptic packaging is only one of three conditions (sterile product, sterile filling environment, sterile bag) — an aseptic bag cannot save contaminated product; second, barrier grade sets the shelf-life ceiling — even the best barrier cannot compensate for a mismatched sterilization process. This is why we work with customers to systematically troubleshoot from source to finished product, locating the problem before deciding on solutions.
