Spiked Cap vs Peristaltic Tube: How a Fresh Milk Bar Saves RMB 270,000 a Year on Milk Bags

Selling milk is a business of small margins. A single fresh milk bar sells roughly 3-8 units of 10L aseptic milk bags a day — about 30-80L of milk. Packaging typically takes 8%-12% of a store's total operating cost, while net margin often sits between 5% and 15%. Every yuan spent on packaging comes almost directly out of profit.
Inside the cost of one 10L milk bag, film, cap, outer packaging and processing each take a share. Film has a practical thickness floor — going thinner trades cost for leakage and burst bags. The cap is the item with the highest unit price and the clearest maths. This article works that maths out.
1. What one cap can be worth over a year
Two dispensing structures are common in fresh milk bars, and their unit prices differ by nearly half:
· Peristaltic tube cap (reference) around RMB 6.5 per set: a set of mechanical parts handles dispensing and sealing — more parts, more assembly steps.
· Spiked cap (QC patent, reference) around RMB 3.5 per set: the dispensing needle of the milk machine pierces the cap directly; a spike plus a sealing structure, fewer parts.
The difference is about RMB 3 per bag. Run it through the volumes a store actually sells:
· Per store: at 5 bags a day, about RMB 15/day → RMB 450/month → around RMB 5,400 a year
· Chain of 50 stores: about RMB 20,000/month → roughly RMB 270,000 a year
Same business, same milk. That RMB 270,000 is not earned back through higher prices — it comes from choosing a different dispensing structure.
2. Why the spiked cap costs less — a matter of structure
The difference is in how milk leaves the bag:
· Peristaltic tube cap: a group of mechanical parts performs dispensing and sealing. More parts and more assembly steps mean a structurally higher cost.
· Spiked cap: the milk machine's needle pierces the cap and milk flows once the needle is seated; sealing relies on the fit between needle and cap. Fewer parts, simpler structure, lower cost.
Simpler also means easier maintenance: the spike can be reused after CIP cleaning or boiling disinfection, keeping day-to-day wear at the store predictable.
3. Lower cost does not mean universal fit
A cap is not a case of "the cheaper the better" — it has to line up with the dispensing method, the filling machine and the filling conditions:
· Fresh milk bar / community milk station with a dispensing machine (draw-out dispensing): the spiked cap fits.
· Stores that pour or dispense by gravity: a standard cap such as a ring-pull screw cap fits better; a spiked cap is awkward here.
· Cream and high-fat dairy: cap choice depends on how the terminal uses it, and these products usually also need a metallised film bag for light and oxygen barrier to slow fat oxidation.
In other words, the spiked cap is a dedicated structure for the fresh-milk-bar dispensing machine scenario. If a store chills the bag and pours milk out, a standard cap is the better fit — something we normally confirm at the selection stage, so that saving money does not lead to the wrong choice.
Two further points need confirming first: the clamp model of the dispensing machine (different clamps require different cap interfaces) and the filling condition (soft RB and hard HA caps match different sealing methods). Once these are fixed, the cap can be right the first time.

Chilled fresh milk is normally stored at 1-10°C; the exact shelf life depends on the customer's process and cold chain. One characteristic of a bag is that it collapses as it empties, so no air is drawn in during dispensing, which reduces exposure to air.
